Wednesday letters: Inclusion
Published on: 01/25/06HOPE has become an entitlement
My compliments to Katherine Park of North Gwinnett High School for her recent article in the Gwinnett section of the AJC concerning the HOPE Scholarship ("HOPE changes crucial to future of education," AJC Gwinnett Opinions, Jan. 11.) She really hit it on the head as to the many problems that have always surrounded the HOPE Scholarship.
As a retired Georgia high school teacher, I can vouch for what she has discovered. I voted against the lottery in the early '90s because I felt sure it would further dumb down education in this state. I even wrote to then-Gov. Zell Miller with this warning, which was never answered.
The HOPE has now become an entitlement, and no sane politician would dare come out against it, even though it has been a detriment to education in Georgia. They all want the vote of parents who want the HOPE entitlement to continue, even though so many of the HOPE recipients flunk out or have to take remedial classes.
Heaven help our poor children in government schools where teachers are afraid not to give inflated grades.
